Led by a Speech-Language Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist, Summer K.A.M.P is a collaborative effort between the Speech, Language & Literacy Centre and Woven Blessings Maternal & Pediatric Services.

This camp is designed for children with complex communication goals who are using or exploring robust augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

What is AAC?

AAC is a term used to describe all the ways someone can communicate without using verbal speech.

AAC is used by individuals who have difficulties with spoken language due to various conditions.

Everyone uses AAC. Some of the types may include:

  • Gestures (e.g., pointing, waving)

  • Facial expressions

  • Body language

  • Communication boards or books

  • Picture systems (e.g., symbols, photos, line drawings)

  • Speech-generating devices (SGDs)

  • Tablets/iPads with AAC apps

K.A.M.P is suitable for children:

  • 6-10 years old who are using or exploring robust augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
  • Needing support for engagement in daily activities and play with sensorimotor goals including:
    • Attention
    • Regulation
    • Body awareness 
  • With mobility goals including ambulatory/non ambulatory to explore fun and inclusive movement opportunities
  • Interested in participating in group activities

What to expect:

Personalized Support: Each camper has a dedicated support person or caregiver present and a custom plan tailored to their specific goals.

Integrated Therapy: Daily SLP and OT sessions include communication and sensorimotor skill-building into camp activities.

Social Growth: Campers build confidence and belonging by connecting with peers who share similar challenges.

Family Empowerment: Parents gain practical home strategies while children participate in purposeful, play-based learning.
